Josh McCarty is a hard-hitting, high-motor defensive back built for the modern NFL. At 5’11” and 196 pounds, McCarty pairs elite strength with top-end speed and a relentless work ethic that has made him one of the most respected special teams players in college football over the past few years.
Originally from Eastern Michigan, McCarty spent five seasons developing his game, transitioning from a converted running back to a fearless strong safety. He made an immediate impact, earning Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year honors as a freshman and showing elite athleticism by winning the first overall selection in Eastern Michigan’s Winter Conditioning Competition.
Over the course of his career, McCarty amassed 30 total special teams tackles over three seasons, becoming a standout for his speed (recording top in-game speeds of over 22.6 mph) and physicality. In 2022, he tied for third nationally in FBS total special teams tackles, earning Honorable Mention All-MAC Special Teamer honors, a National Special Teams Player of the Year finalist nod, and an impressive 80.9 PFF grade.

McCarty transferred to the University of Pittsburgh for his final season in 2024, stepping up to the Power Four level and quickly becoming a key contributor. He played in all 13 games for Pitt, finishing second in total special teams tackles (7) and second in special teams snaps (216), all while recording a top speed in every single game, including a season-best 21.6 mph vs. Clemson.
